Fred Middleton has over 28 years experience in the biotechnology and biomedical industries in both corporate management and as a new venture investor. Mr. Middleton joined Sanderling in 1987 as a general partner. Since then, Mr. Middleton has worked on venture capital investments and the corporate development of early-stage biomedical companies at Sanderling, serving as a founder, investor, management team member and director of many start-up ventures in Sanderling’s portfolio.
Over the last several years, he has played active management roles as Chairman, CEO or Director of a number of Sanderling portfolio companies, currently including Stereotaxis (NASDAQ: STXS), Favrille (NASDAQ: FVRL), CardioNet (NASDAQ: BEAT), Novocell, Cylene, Endocyte, and Actimis.
Mr. Middleton began his career as a consultant for McKinsey & Company’s San Francisco office from 1973 to 1975. He subsequently worked as a Vice President in planning and corporate development at Chase Manhattan Bank in New York. In 1978, Mr. Middleton joined Genentech, Inc., as the third member of the original management team, where he served in various capacities, including Vice President of Finance, Administration, Corporate Development, Chief Financial Officer, and as President of Genentech Development Corporation. While at Genentech, Mr. Middleton successfully completed over $200 million in corporate partnering and institutional funding transactions, including the Company’s successful IPO in 1980.
After Genentech, Mr. Middleton founded Morgan Stanley Ventures in 1984, serving as Managing General Partner of an institutional fund raised to sponsor R&D funding arrangements at leading technology companies in the biomedical sciences and information technology fields.
Mr. Middleton earned his B.S. in chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1971 and an M.B.A with distinction from Harvard Business School in 1973.
Dr. Luke Evnin joined MPM in 1998 to launch MPM’s first venture fund and established the San Francisco office for the firm in 1999. Dr. Evnin was at Accel Partners for over seven years including four as a General Partner. He was involved in biopharmaceutical, medical device and healthcare service companies for Accel’s funds III, IV and V. Dr. Evnin earned his Ph.D. in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of California, San Francisco, and he received his A.B. in Molecular Biology magna cum laude from Princeton University. Dr. Evnin is currently a Director of Enteromedics (NASDAQ:ETRM), Metabasis Therapeutics (NASDAQ:MBRX), Oxagen, Peptimmune, Restore Medical (NASDAQ:REST) and Pacira (SkyePharma). He was previously a Director at Idun Pharmaceuticals, Oscient (NASDAQ:OSCI) Sonic Innovations (NASDAQ:SNCI), Epic Therapeutics, EPIX Medical (NASDAQ:EPIX), Signal Pharmaceuticals and several other private companies.
Carl L. Gordon, Ph.D., CFA, is a founding General Partner of OrbiMed and Co-Head of Private Equity. Mr. Gordon is active in both private equity and small-capitalization public equity investments. He was a senior biotechnology analyst at Mehta and Isaly from 1995 to 1997. He was a Fellow at The Rockefeller University from 1993 to 1995. Mr. Gordon received a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His doctoral work involved studies of protein folding and assembly. He received a Bachelors degree from Harvard College.
John P. Longenecker, Ph.D. currently serves as CEO of Favrille, Inc. and has more than 25 years experience in the biotech/pharmaceutical arena. His experience includes the growth of two biotechnology companies from start up to product approval. He has participated in all aspects of company development including public offerings, venture capital funding, corporate partnering and management of collaborations, mergers and acquisitions. In 1992, Dr. Longenecker joined DepoTech as Senior Vice President of Research, Development and Operations and then served as President and COO from February 1998 to March 1999. Under Dr. Longenecker’s leadership, DepoTech took its lead product, Depocyt, from early pre-clinical research and development through to commercial launch. Following SkyePharma PLCs acquisition of DepoTech in 1999, Dr. Longenecker served as President for the U.S. operations of SkyePharma Inc. and as a Member of the Executive Committee for SkyePharma PLC. From 1982 to 1992, Dr. Longenecker was at Scios (Cal Bio), a biotechnology company in the San Francisco Bay Area where he served as Vice-President and Director of Development. Dr. Longenecker was also a Director of a number of Cal Bio subsidiaries during this period including Meta Bio and Karo Bio. Dr. Longenecker holds a B.S. in Chemistry from Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from The Australian National University in Canberra, Australia. He was a post doctoral fellow at Stanford University from 1980 to 1982.
Dr. Pace is currently Deputy Chairman of Hunter Immunology Ltd. He is also the co-founder and past Chairman and CEO of QRxPharma Ltd (ASX: QRX) and continues to work with the Company as a Consultant. Dr. Pace is a seasoned biopharmaceutical executive with over 30 years of experience in the industry. He has co-founded a number of early stage life science companies where he built products from the laboratory to commercialisation.
Dr Pace is currently a Visiting Scientist at MIT, and a Director of ResMed Inc (NYSE: RMD), Transition Therapeutics Inc (TSX: TTH), Celsion Corp (NASDAQ: CLN) and Peplin Limited (ASX: PEP). Dr Pace is an elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, author and co-author of over 50 research papers, reviews, and patents. In 2003, Dr Pace was awarded a Centenary Medal by the Australian Government for service to Australian society in research and development. Dr Pace holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) from the University of New South Wales and a PhD from MIT, where he was a Fulbright Scholar.
David Stack became President, CEO, and a member of the Board of Directors of Pacira in December 2007. With over 25 years of successful industry experience in both large public and small private companies, Mr. Stack is evolving Pacira from a sustained release injectable technology company into a fully integrated, acute care pharmaceutical company.
Mr. Stack also remains a Managing Director at MPM Capital, and President and General Partner of Stack Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a firm assisting emerging healthcare companies in the commercialization of their products since 1998.
From September 2001 to August 2004, Mr. Stack was President, CEO and a Director of the The Medicines Company. During this time, he was recognized as the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2003 (New Jersey Healthcare). Prior to The Medicines Company, Mr. Stack was the President and General Manager of Innovex Inc., a commercial solutions company. From 1993 to 1995, Mr. Stack was the Vice President of Business Development and Marketing for Immunomedics, Inc., and from 1992 to 1993, Mr. Stack had been the Director of Business Development and Planning for Infectious Disease, Oncology and Virology of Roche Laboratories. He held other commercial positions with Roche Laboratories for almost 11 years.
Mr. Stack is a Director of Bio-Imaging Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:BITI), PepTx, Inc., Molecular Insight Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ:MIPI) and Elixir Pharmaceuticals Inc.
Mr. Stack holds a degree in pharmacy from Albany College and a BS in biology from Siena College.
Dr. Wicki is a successful healthcare entrepreneur and investor with over 15 years of experience in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. He was co-owner and CEO of ANAWA Holding AG, a healthcare analytical services company. Dr. Wicki has his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in chemistry and biochemistry from the University of Berne, Switzerland. Dr. Wicki is a member of the Board of Directors of Basilea Pharmaceutica AG, Buchler GmbH, MDS Pharma Services Switzerland AG, Pacira Inc., PharmaSwiss AG, HBM Partners Ltd. and HBM BioVentures (Cayman) Ltd.
