DepoBupivacaine™ is formulated with Pacira Pharmaceuticals DepoFoam® technology. DepoFoam is a lipid-based technology, which encapsulates the drug in multivesicular liposomal particles designed to release the drug over 72 hours.
DepoBupivacaine is being developed to use the same route of administration, infiltration, as the well known medication bupivacaine. Unlike bupivacaine, DepoBupivacaine is expected to offer the benefit of prolonged postoperative analgesia, making the transition to its use simple and straightforward.
The use of DepoBupivacaine for postsurgical analgesia is anticipated to have a positive impact on the management of pain with less concomitant opioids, resulting in fewer opioid related side effects.
