A single dose of DepoDur:
- Provides many of the benefits provided by epidural patient-controlled opioid analgesia (PCA), without the increased risk of neurological consequences or infection associated with infusions or repeat injections.
- Reduces the use of supplemental analgesia compared with a standard dose of morphine sulfate given by epidural injection.
- Eliminates the need for supplemental opioid IV PCA in some patients.
DepoDur has an adverse event profile similar to that of other epidurally administered analgesics and the most common adverse events reported in clinical studies were decreased oxygen saturation, hypotension, urinary retention, vomiting, constipation, nausea, pruritus, pyrexia, anemia, headache and dizziness. As with all opioids, the chief hazard of all formulations of morphine sulfate is respiratory depression.
